Long lines are common in food area 1 and food area 2. You can avoid lines for food if you go to one of the several other food booths scattered around Jazz Fest.

You can also find some of these other food options year round.

CONGO SQUARE
Jama-Jama (Sautéed Spinach), Fried Plaintains, Poulet Fricassee (Chicken on a Stick)

In Congo Square you will find Jama-Jama, Fried Plaintains, Poulet Fricassee prepared by Bennachin Restaurant.

Bennachin Restaurant’s origins are Gambia and Cameroon. They have been in business since 1992.

If you are looking for some Jama-Jama year round stop by 1212 Royal St in the French Quarter.

HERITAGE SQUARE
Beignets, Café Au Lait (Hot, Iced, Frozen)

Beignets and Café Au Lait at Cafe Du Monde

It is not hard to find Beignets year round in New Orleans. There are many places to get beignets but if you are looking for Cafe Du Monde beignets there are several locations around the city.

The Original Cafe Du Monde Coffee Stand was established in 1862 in the New Orleans French Market. This location is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Crawfish Bisque, Creole Filé Gumbo, Redfish Baquet

In Heritage Square you will find Crawfish Bisque, Creole Filé Gumbo, Redfish Baquet from Baquet’s Li’l Dizzy’s Café.

Lil’ Dizzy’s Cafe opened in 2005 on the corner of Esplanade Avenue and N. Robertson Street.

Not only can you find the food they serve at Jazz Fest at Lil’ Dizzy’s, but they have a daily buffet that allows you to try a variety of their New Orleans specialties.

Although they do not serve fried chicken at Jazz Fest, they are famous for it. At Lil’ Dizzy’s, producing great fried chicken is a matter of historical pride.

Stop by Lil’ Dizzy’s for their daily buffet or Sunday brunch.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE PAVILLION
Colombo de Poulet (Martinican Chicken Curry), Pão de Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread), Bunny Chow (South African Veggie Curry)

Pão de Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread) at Carmo.

Carmo is one of the few food vendors at Jazz Fest that offers a vegetarian option with their “Bunny Chow” which is a South African veggie curry.

They are a tropical restaurant and bar with a commitment to providing vegans, vegetarians and omnivores with healthy and affordable dishes.

Carmo’s places a priority on local, organic ingredients.

You can go to the restaurant at 527 Julia Street, or have an event catered.

KIDS FOOD
Baked Macaroni & Cheese, Sloppy Jeaux Sandwich, Huckabuck Frozen Cups

Ms. Linda, who is famous for her delicious hangover cure Ya Ka Mein in food area one, has a second food booth in the children’s area.

There is a seafood version of this dish available on Ms. Linda’s website.

She also serves Huckabuck’s Frozen Cups. These frozen treats are made by Huckabuck out of Gretna.

A Huckabuck is what many of us called a “freezee” as a child. It is basically Kool-aid or fruit juice frozen in a small cup. Once the treat is frozen you flip it over in the cup and eat it.

The Roman Candy Company began as a family treat with a recipe that dates back four generations to 1915.

The Roman Candy gourmet taffy initially sold for 5 cents a stick and stayed at that price until 1970.

In 1915 the iconic wagon that is still used today was built.

The wagon and mule can be seen rolling through the streets of New Orleans, Uptown, Downtown and occasionally in the suburbs on an almost daily basis.

To celebrate the centennial anniversary of Roman Chewing Candy, they released Roman Candy Rum in 2015.

Mango Freeze

It's sweet, tart, icy-cold, and a blazing shade of orange. On a hot day at Jazz Fest, there's nothing more refreshing than the Mango Freeze.

Mango Freeze generates revenue that helps WWOZ bring New Orleans music to the universe.

Sorbets have zero dairy content, so they are lighter than sherbet or ice cream and have a clean, pure fruit flavor. Mango Freeze contains nothing but mangoes, sugar and water. The mangos used are the highly esteemed Alphonso variety imported from India.

I am aware that many of the delicious offerings at Jazz Fest are not on these pages, the reasons for this is because information could not be found or they only serve these items at Jazz Fest.

Decisions, Delicious Decisions

As I said in part one, I do head straight to the food when I get into Jazz Fest, but decisions, decisions.

Now I can just get what I am craving in the moment and get most of the other Jazz Fest treats year round without the lines. Waiting in line means you're missing the music!

Here is where you can get some of the dishes found in Food Area 2 year round.

Rosemint Herbal Iced Tea and Mandarin Orange Herbal Iced Tea

Rosmint Herbal Tea by Sunshine Concessions is a refreshing break from the heat that usually accompanies Jazz Fest.

Even better is it mixes well with the bourbon or vodka you snuck in.

I cannot find any information on where to get the Jazz Fest drink and Sunshine Concessions does not have a web presence. So I decided to give you the next best thing.

The Galley Seafood Restaurant is the home of the famous soft shell crab and catfish filet po-boys served at The Jazz Fest since 1977.

After much success at festivals around the U.S. they began catering for businesses around Louisiana.

From there their restaurant was born! Now you can get a soft shell crab po-boy year round!

Pheasant, Quail & Andouille Gumbo, Crab & Crawfish Stuffed Mushrooms, Crawfish Enchilada

Since April 15, 1980, people from around Acadiana have been stopping in to sample the savory dishes created by Prejean's culinary experts.

Prejean's holds the record for the most medals captured by any culinary team in the south.

Their Crawfish Enchilada is made with a crawfish and Rotel cream sauce, wrapped in a flour tortilla, topped with shredded three blend cheese, baked and served with their zesty creole sauce.

The mushroom caps are filled with a delicate crab and shrimp stuffing, dusted with parmesan cheese, baked and drizzled with crab butter cream sauce.

Mrs. Wheat's Meat Pie

Mrs. Helen Wheat from Natchitoches, Louisiana, was the best at making Meat Pies.

In 1979 her son, Jim Wheat, opened the restaurant known as Wheaty’s in Metairie.

This is when Mrs. Wheat’s introduced her “Natchitoches Meat Pies” & “Crawfish Pies” to the New Orleans area.

These meat pies are some of the easiest to find year round at festivals, restaurants, and even at local stores.

Or you can just order them directly from Mrs. Wheat’s.

Stuffed Beignets: Lump Crab, Praline, Chocolate

Loretta was the first African American woman to successfully own and operate her own praline company in New Orleans, Loretta’s Authentic Pralines.

She has won numerous awards for her contribution to the economic success of New Orleans, service to her community, and her philanthropist spirit.

Her stuffed beignets are a savory approach to the traditional beignet. This french donut is fried until golden and stuffed with succulent crab meat that has been sautéed with mushroom and butter and Served with Ms. Loretta’s special sauce.

Cottage Catering in River Ridge, Louisiana, serves their famous Crawfish Strudel with Penne pasta tossed in a spicy creole cream sauce.

Creole's Lunch House has been Louisiana’s most beloved source for stuffed breads since 1983.

Their signature stuffed bread is loaded with ground beef, mild peppers and pork sausage.

When the gates open at Jazz Fest most people rush to claim their piece of land and raise their flag at one of the stages. Not me, I go straight for the food I have been craving since the previous year's Jazz Fest ended.

Why do we have to wait to get "Jazz Fest" food? I want it in late May, I want it in October, I want it year round!

Here is where you can get some of the dishes year round that are found in Food Area 1.

Crawfish Bread, Shrimp Bread, Sausage & Jalapeño Bread

The Crawfish Bread is made by Panaroma Foods in Marksville Louisiana. Panaroma Foods is a catering company Started by John Ed Laborde in 1984.

You do not have to wait until the gates open at Jazz fest to get Crawfish Bread. Crawfish, sausage and shrimp bread can be shipped to you from NoLa Crawfish Bread.

Crawfish Sausage Poboy, Vaucresson’s Sausage Co.

The Vaucresson family has been making their delicious sausage in New Orleans’ seventh ward since 1899.

Vaucresson’s is the only original food vendor at every Jazz Fest. They are also an original food vendor of the French Quarter Festival.

You can get their crawfish and hot sausage delivered anytime of year from the Vaucresson Sausage website.

Pat’sGallagher’s family has been serving Crab Cakes, Pecan Catfish Meuniere, and Seafood Mirliton Casserole for 15 years.

in Olde Town Slidell.

You can get the Pecan Catfish Meuniere and Seafood Mirliton Casserole at his other restaurant, Gallagher’s 527.

Fireman Mike has two food booths at Jazz Fest. He is serving Alligator Sauce Piquante, Shrimp & Grits, Shrimp, and Sausage & Okra Gumbo in food area 1.

His second booth is in the kids area and will be looked at in part 3 of this blog.

“Fireman Mike” Gowland capitalized on his success at Jazz Fest and appearances on Food Network shows by opening Fireman Mike’s Café & Sweet Shop in 2018.

You can find many of these Jazz Fest dishes served at Fireman Mike’s Café & Sweet Shop on 203 West Harrison Avenue in Lakeview.

Cochon de Lait Po-Boy

The Walker family started Love at First Bite in 1992 and soon began traveling across the country attending food festivals.

In 2001, they began selling the Cochon de Lait Po-boy at Jazz Fest.

Eleven months prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, Walker's Southern Style BBQ opened in New Orleans East.

For more than 60 years the Patton Family has been delivering the taste of New Orleans to satisfied guests across the country.

In 2002, the Patton children purchased the historic Salmen-Fritchie House in Olde Towne Slidell which is available to host your special event. Outside of festivals and catered events this is the only place you can get these items.

I am not sure if there is another way to get these delicious foods. If I find out I will "get me some". . . and then update this post.

Ms. Linda Green is well-known and highly regarded as a New Orleans Icon. She has been featured on the Food Network, Anthouny Bourdain’s No Reservations and United Taste of America.

Ms. Linda is world famous as the guardian of the secret juice recipe in her Ya-Ka-Mein. She was taught how to make the broth by her mother Shirley Green.

Ms. Linda insists her Ya-Ka-Mein is a remedy for a New Orleans’ size headache (hangover), which is why it’s known as “Old Sober.” Be sure to take some to go for breakfast.
